Communication Component (COM)

The COM component follows a predefined, layered communication architecture that maximizes the CAN bus utilization in a scenario where multiple number of nodes exist in a network.
The COM layer contains the following functional modules:
  • Signal Interaction Layer (SIL)
  • Gateway (GW)
  • Data Link Layer (DLL)
  • CAN and LIN Driver

Key Features
  • Signal parser tool generates a signal database that can be separately flashed during vehicle integration independent of COM and application software
  • Supports both standard and extended CAN identifiers
  • Supports only UUDT messages
  • Signal level interface to application and frame level for diagnostics
  • Supports periodic, event periodic, sporadic and immediate frames
  • Supports variable/fixed DLC

Network Management Component (NM)

The Network Management Layer ensures the security of the CAN communication in the network and allows only authorized nodes to participate in communication. The NM component supports node monitoring by dedicated NM messages.

Key Features
  • Facilitates start-up and shutdown of communication on the network
  • Handles communication failures (transmission and reception errors)
  • Coordination of global operation modes (network sleep/wakeup)
  • Dedicated NM messages using token ring principle
  • Two variants - single instance and dual instances
  • Network frame configuration procedure

Software Download Layer (SWDL)

The Bootloader software flashes new versions of application software into an ECU either in assembly or service. The Bootloader software resides within the ECU and interacts with a PC-based flash tool to support downloading and uploading of application software. KPIT CUMMINS' Bootloader™ is based on ISO 14229 specifications with ISO 15765 - 2.4 Network Layer services.

Key Features
  • Consists of PBL in protected flash and SBL in RAM
  • Flash algorithms in SBL only so that accidental re-flashing during application execution can be avoided
  • Workarounds in SBL possible in case of errors in PBL
  • Independent component with minimal interaction with application
  • Uses only reset and COP (watchdog) interrupts
  • Supports download to sub-nodes (optional)
  • Minimal diagnostic services

Diagnostic Kernel Component (DK)

The Diagnostics Kernel software is used to transfer information from an ECU to an off-board tester and vice-versa. The information transferred consists of ECU fault information, parameter reporting, calibration values and many other types of data. The data can be used in performing ECU diagnostics. These are not associated with normal node-to-node communication. The component is based on ISO 14229 and ISO 15765 Diag-on- CAN standards.

Key Features
  • Composed of network and diagnostic layers
  • Dynamic changes in flow control parameters
  • Scalability of services
  • Scalability within the service
  • Tool to support DK configuration
  • DK includes fault handler
  • 11 bit diagnostic gateway
